As Bob Reuter said, the Vultures “capture the spirit of what rock & roll is all about.” If you grew up or hung around the south side of St. Louis between 2005 and 2008, you probably had a really good time at a Vultures show. They were what every garage band wants to be. Their self-titled EP received positive reviews from legendary DIY magazines like Under the Volcano and Maximum Rock n’ Roll. Rockabilly Magazine called their blend of punk and rock n’ roll one “of cacophonic tenor and with endearing drive.” Punk Planet claimed they were “heavier than even the Cramps.” No Brains called their debut album a “masterpiece.” Before disbanding in 2008, The Vultures successfully embarked on a number of national tours, making stops at prestigious rock n’ roll festivals like the Heavy Rebel Weekender and the Drop Dead Festival in New York.
They will always be remembered by the people who knew them as the real deal. Ryan and Joey went on to form the Rum Drum Ramblers with Mat Wilson. They were also called upon by Pokey LaFarge to back him as two thirds of the South City Three. Ashley Hohman can now be found playing bass and singing in the outrageously awesome Doomtown, one of today’s finest punk bands.
